Tyler Perry Nominated For Worst Actress - Yes, Worst Actress

Move over Oscars because the Razzies committee announced their nominations for worst film depictions and Tyler Perry made this list in a seemingly impossible feat under Worst Actor and - wait for it - Worst Actress, and Worst On Screen Couple, as well.

Actor-Director-Writer Tyler Perry received multiple nominations and the Razzies hit Perry in almost every category. Perry was selected for Worst Actress for his drag role of Madea in "Madea's Witness Protection." (SBW wants to go on record that neither of us have seen this film and do not plan on doing so.) He was nominated as Worst Actor for his roles in "Good Deeds" and "Alex Cross." He was nominated for Worst Director for "Madea's Witness Protection" and "Good Deeds." Finally, Tyler Perry & his drag alter ego were nominated as Worst On Screen Couple for "Madea’s Witness Protection."

Clearly, the Razzie committee does not hold Tyler Perry with strong affections. We can only wonder why.

Tyler Perry is greedy. Hollywood is a competitive place that has been slow to highlight the skills of black actresses. It would be fair to say that Hollywood rarely produces quality roles for black actresses that don't require them to play maids (The Help) or take off their clothes (Monster's Ball). But, where Tyler Perry has the ability to cast a black actress in the title role of Madea in his (albeit foolish) Madea franchise, he doesn't. This post is by no means an endorsement of Tyler Perry's work as quality.

Maybe Mr. Perry will pull a Halle Berry and accept the award in person.

Tyler Perry to Join OWN

Tyler Perry will be creating two original scripted series for the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). They will debut in 2013. Perry already has three television shows on TBS: House of Payne, Meet the Browns, and For Better or Worse.

The exclusive deal with OWN means that there will be no Tyler TV, the name of the cable network he had been shopping around to companies.

Although OWN has struggled since its start at the beginning of 2011, the ratings have improved in recent months.

SBW wonders if Perry will be dressing in drag for both series because there is enough mammification in his other projects. No need to contaminate OWN too.

Stop the Bullying, Cult of Blackness

In response to what he perceives as pressure from African Americans to support the movie Red Tails, author Javon Johnson reports that he will not be bullied by "the Cult of Blackness". He says he means no disrespect to the film, but he believes that such pressure is based on flawed logic: Black people made it so Black people must support it.

"I mean, if all Black-people-should-support-Black-films, then we should also pay for all Tyler Perry movies, Soul Plane, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Kazaam, Glitter, The Cookout, Who's Your Caddy, Norbit, Meet Dave, or any those made for TV BET movies too," Johnson says.

This is an interesting point.

SBW does not support the shenanigans of BET or Tyler Perry movies. [I'm sure Ntozake Shange is still shaking her head in disappointment at Perry's horrible attempt at presenting the story of Black women to the world in For Colored Girls. I know that I am still shaking my head.]

Kudos to Mr. Johnson for making such a pointed criticism.
