In response to what he perceives as pressure from African Americans to support the movie Red Tails, author Javon Johnson reports that he will not be bullied by "the Cult of Blackness". He says he means no disrespect to the film, but he believes that such pressure is based on flawed logic: Black people made it so Black people must support it.
"I mean, if all Black-people-should-support-Black-films, then we should also pay for all Tyler Perry movies, Soul Plane, The Adventures of Pluto Nash, Kazaam, Glitter, The Cookout, Who's Your Caddy, Norbit, Meet Dave, or any those made for TV BET movies too," Johnson says.
This is an interesting point.
SBW does not support the shenanigans of BET or Tyler Perry movies. [I'm sure Ntozake Shange is still shaking her head in disappointment at Perry's horrible attempt at presenting the story of Black women to the world in For Colored Girls. I know that I am still shaking my head.]
Kudos to Mr. Johnson for making such a pointed criticism.
