Move over Oscars because the Razzies committee announced their nominations for worst film depictions and Tyler Perry made this list in a seemingly impossible feat under Worst Actor and - wait for it - Worst Actress, and Worst On Screen Couple, as well.
Actor-Director-Writer Tyler Perry received multiple nominations and the Razzies hit Perry in almost every category. Perry was selected for Worst Actress for his drag role of Madea in "Madea's Witness Protection." (SBW wants to go on record that neither of us have seen this film and do not plan on doing so.) He was nominated as Worst Actor for his roles in "Good Deeds" and "Alex Cross." He was nominated for Worst Director for "Madea's Witness Protection" and "Good Deeds." Finally, Tyler Perry & his drag alter ego were nominated as Worst On Screen Couple for "Madea’s Witness Protection."
Clearly, the Razzie committee does not hold Tyler Perry with strong affections. We can only wonder why.
Tyler Perry is greedy. Hollywood is a competitive place that has been slow to highlight the skills of black actresses. It would be fair to say that Hollywood rarely produces quality roles for black actresses that don't require them to play maids (The Help) or take off their clothes (Monster's Ball). But, where Tyler Perry has the ability to cast a black actress in the title role of Madea in his (albeit foolish) Madea franchise, he doesn't. This post is by no means an endorsement of Tyler Perry's work as quality.
Maybe Mr. Perry will pull a Halle Berry and accept the award in person.
