Residents of the Oakland Mills neighborhood in Columbia, Maryland have succeeded in getting the county to change 'Coon Hunt Court' to 'April Wind Court'.
After petitioning for more than half of this year, the County Planning Board approved the new name last month.
County Executive Ken Ulman said the name change was long overdue.
At the unveiling ceremony, resident Ambrose Lane Jr. said "For more than 175 years, the word 'coon' represented
racism and bigotry against African-American people. We come here today
to right the wrong, to correct the mistake, to continue James Rouse's
vision and dream of an inclusive, neighborly, and multiracial Columbia
community." Rouse is the founder of Columbia and we're sure he would be proud of the residents' work.
