More than 150 new laws went into effect in Illinois this past Tuesday, including a 'sin tax' on strip clubs.
The law places an annual surcharge on all strip clubs that serve alcohol and feature live dancing. Each club could pay $3 per customer or a lump sum based on revenue each year.
The money raised will go toward the state's rape crisis centers, which have lost significant amounts of funding from the state.
The bill passed unanimously in the Illinois Senate and is set to raise more than $1 million for the shelters.
Opponents of the bill say it unfairly targets an industry, which provides a large portion of revenue to many areas of the state. On the other hand, proponents believe an industry that creates problems in society should be forced to bear part of the cost in helping create a solution.
