1 Slave x 2 Beatings = Math Homework for Georgia 3rd Graders

Third graders at Georgia's Beaver Ridge Elementary found the following problem on their math homework sheets: If Frederick got two beatings per day, how many beatings did he get in one week? two weeks? By the way, that is a reference to escaped slave and abolitionist Frederick Douglass.
Slavery and beatings continue across this nation and world, and they certainly are not appropriate topics for math homework. Unless, the teachers at Beaver Ridge Elementary used this assignment to show the correlation between slavery, beatings, and black disenfranchisement, then this homework assignment is nothing but racist!
