Under a new Indonesian law, women are banned from straddling motorcycles.
Why, you ask?
Suaidi Yahya, mayor of the Aceh city, supports the ban because the “curves of a woman’s
body” are more tempting in that position on the motorbike. “Muslim women are not allowed to show
their curves, it’s against Islamic teachings,” he said.
Officials in the Aceh province have enacted a law banning female passengers from straddling motorbikes unless there is an "emergency". In addition, women are not allowed to hold on to the drivers.
This seems safe to us!
The province began enforcing a type of Shariah law in 2009. Laws are already in place to regulate the dress of women in the province and those who do not comply can be publicly caned.
