The December/January issue of EBONY magazine hits newsstands Monday. It features the 2012 Power 100 list, comprised of "the 100 primary influencers and game changers who made vital accomplishments during the past year."
On Friday, the magazine honored the influencers at the EBONY Power 100 Gala held in New York City's Lincoln Center.
From authors and entertainers to athletes and politicians, the list includes leaders in business, media, the creative arts, and religion.
Of course, the usual individuals are honored: President Obama, Michelle Obama, Eric Holder, Beyonce and Jay-Z. It also includes academicians like Cornel West, Michelle Alexander, and Henry Louis Gates, Jr. Cee Lo Green, Oprah, and Dr. Dre are among the entertainers featured. LeBron James, Magic Johnson, Serena Williams, and Gabby Douglas are among the athletes honored. Also honored are Misty Copeland, Toni Morrison, and Ava DuVernay. MSNBC and Django Unchained have their own spots on the list as does Trayvon Martin and civil rights legend John Lewis. Sadly, Steve Harvey and Think Like a Man take up two spaces from more deserving African American influencers.
