Harry Belafonte Received Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award

Singer and civil rights activist, Harry Belafonte, received the Desmond Tutu Social Justice Award on October 13, 2012, to celebrate his commitment to civil rights in the the United States and South Africa. Belafonte is known as the "King of Calypso," and most famous for the "The Banana Boat Song," also known as "Day-O."

Belafonte was a prominent figure in The Civil Rights Movement, who bailed Martin Luther King Jr. out of jail, and bank-rolled the efforts of the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). Read more here.
