Many students' complaints are based on the fact that Heimbach was president of Youth for Western Civilization, a defunct organization that was active during the prior school year. The group held events against Islam, diversity education, and marriage equality. Over one thousand students have signed a petition demanding that the President of the University denounce the organization.
So far, Facebook has banned the White Student Union page from the website as "hate speech."
"Every ethnic group has its own advocacy group but white students don't. We essentially want to replicate what every student union does on campus. You have a Black student Union who promotes black heroes, we want to do the same thing.” Heimbach says.
He continues:
"We'd also want to create a safe space for members who have filed hate/bias reports and who have had anti-white language used against them. Especially the female members who have heard 'cracker' and 'honkie,' and nothing has ever come of it. It’s a support network for a campus that is hostile toward white students." Last week, the organization brought Jared Taylor, an individual described as a "white nationalist" by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
