Amelia Earhart was the first person to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean. But Earhart disappeared in 1937 during an attempt to perform a circumnavigational flight, and since then, theories of her disappearance have been circling until now reports, "The Washington Post."
This refueled effort to find out what happened to Earhart is the product of $500,000 in public and private funds. Enhanced technology has helped researchers find sufficient detail in a photo taken nine months after the plane disappeared. Researchers believe this photo captures a shot of the landing gear from Earhart's plane.
Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell called the disappearance of Earhart "the last great unsolved mystery of the 20th century." Along with the Wright Brothers, Amelia Earhart is one of the most notable aviators in history, and now it seems that the landing gear for her last flight has finally been let down.
The legacy of this aviation pioneer is certainly worthy of honor during Women's History Month.
